About Us

Steve Hartwig
Steve has spent more than 30 years training, teaching and presenting martial arts around the world and highlighted his professional career with winning a 2006 World Championship. For 20 years he ran several full-time martial arts schools in the Langley area and is very happy to be back!
Throughout Steve’s career he has focused primarily on youth leadership and development. His professional mission statement is “Empowering youth to walk with courage, acceptance and strength…”
In 1996, tragic circumstances inspired the development of a specialized self-defence program for women and youth. Steve started leading this program in schools and districts throughout the lower mainland. With continued development, this program now includes elements of self-defence, confrontation management, martial arts fitness, scenario based-training and situational re-enactments. Steve has participated in and mentored for several peer groups that assist individuals with anger-management, PTSD and military transition to civilian life.
During the summer of 2014, Steve founded INTO NO MAN’S LAND as an organization to assist with awareness, advocacy and the care of military veterans and first responders. He marched from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL with the mandate to create an open dialogue for PTSD, veteran’s issues, suicide prevention and care provision for those with mental health challenges. The success of the march was well documented and received by the general public, government and media.
Steve looks to continue to raise awareness, advocate for those in need and bring his unique experience to youth as an example of overcoming the challenges of life.
Steve was born and raised in the lower mainland. He is a devoted father of four children that include pre-K, elementary and high school ages. He has been fortunate to travel the world and served with both the Canadian Armed Forces and the United Nations as a peacekeeper during the Balkan’s conflict.

Martial arts training offers one of the best combinations of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual training. Through the many rigorous physical challenges, students learn to face adversity on all levels. Learning to overcome many mental barriers is critical to growth and development into a successful and positive adult. As well, learning to handle one's emotions and deal with failure, loss and negativity will contribute significantly to life. Many people also find some measure of spirit and fulfillment along the way.
As our training progresses, we can look at enhancing our life in many ways. MANA and Performance Martial Arts follow traditional paths that allow students to continue training their entire lives. We incorporate many modern study methods that keep participants fit, healthy and positively optimistic. This brings a confidence and willingness to succeed!
We welcome beginners as young as 6 years of age. We understand that the mind of the beginner, full of excitement and curiosity, is the place to begin training and we look to maintain this throughout the years of practice and study.
Come and learn about the benefits and experience we bring to hundreds of lives. Our team will welcome your family and help guide them on the amazing path of self-discovery that our martial arts offer.
